Articling and Summering

Articling and Summering with Chown, Cairns LLP

Chown, Cairns LLP is a full-service law firm located in downtown St.Catharines at 80 King St. The open-door policy in our firm gives our students access to our highly qualified team of lawyers and staff.

The articling program is loosely based on two rotations so the students will have a well-rounded articling experience in all of our service areas. One rotation is in Corporate/Commercial which gives our students experience working in Real Estate, Wills & Estates, Insurance, and Business Law. The second rotation gives our students practical experience working in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Law, Personal Injury, Civil Litigation, and Labour and Employment Law. In some cases, one rotation will carry on into the second as the student sees files through to their closing.

Typically we hire two students per Articling term. Qualities that we look for in our students are intelligence, dedication, initiative and a general fit within the firm. As we service the Niagara Region, we require that our students have reliable transportation to facilitate their work. Compensation is determined before the start of each term and is competitive with other firms in the Niagara Region.

Our summer program is less structured than the articling program, however our students still achieve a well-rounded experience by receiving work from each area of the law our lawyers practice in. For the summer program, we typically hire one student. Just as with the articling program, we require the student to have reliable transportation and compensation remains competitive with other firms in the Niagara Region.

Our objective in hiring students is to attempt to identify individuals who will remain and grow with the firm, initially as associates and, ultimately, as Partners. It is, of course, not always possible to predict the number of positions available for articling students at the time they receive their call to the Bar, however the majority of Chown, Cairns LLP's lawyers began their careers as articling students with our firm.
